# AI Task Generation

Don't want to build your task checklist from scratch? Let AI analyze your transaction and suggest tasks for you.

## How it works

1. Open a transaction and go to the **Tasks** tab
2. Click **Generate**
3. DocJacket looks at the transaction details and existing tasks
4. Review the **Suggested Tasks** panel
5. Select the suggestions you want to keep, or use **Select All**
6. Click **Add Selected**

The selected tasks are added to the transaction with their suggested name, description, and priority. Review the generated list before adding it; the generator is meant to supplement your judgment, not replace a checklist you already trust.

## What makes the suggestions good

The transaction task generator uses:

- **Transaction type** — A residential purchase has different tasks than a commercial lease
- **Transaction side** — Buyer-side and seller-side workflows differ
- **Financing type** — Financing can change the work that needs to happen
- **Contract and closing dates** — When available, these provide timeline context
- **Your existing tasks** — AI avoids suggesting tasks you've already added

## AI vs. Templates

Both AI generation and [checklists](/docs/templates/task-templates) can populate your task list. Here's when to use each:

| Use AI generation when... | Use templates when... |
|--------------------------|----------------------|
| You want tasks tailored to this specific deal | You have a proven checklist you use every time |
| It's an unusual transaction type | You want consistent tasks across all deals |
| You're not sure what tasks you need | You've already customized a template you love |

You can also use both — apply a template first, then run AI generation to catch anything the template missed. For reusable workflow design, use the template builder's AI generation tools instead of generating one-off tasks inside a transaction.
