# How to use the Group Text Assistant

Using it is two things: **turn on monitoring for the deal**, and **include DocJacket in the group text when you start it**. After that you text exactly the way you already do — DocJacket rides along and captures the conversation.

:::info You'll need a DocJacket number first
The **Monitor this group text** control appears once your organization has a DocJacket text number (that's the number you include in the group). If you don't see it yet, set up your number in **Settings → SMS** — then it shows on every deal's **Texts** tab.
:::

## Step 1 — Turn on monitoring for the deal

Open the transaction and go to the **Texts** tab. Turn on **Monitor this group text** for that deal.

This tells DocJacket to watch the group text tied to this transaction. It's **per deal** — you decide which transactions have an assistant in the group and which don't. Monitoring is **off** until you turn it on, so no conversation is captured by surprise.

## Step 2 — Start the group text with DocJacket included

Save your organization's DocJacket number in your phone as **"DocJacket Assistant"** so it's easy to find, then start the transaction group text the normal way and **add the DocJacket number as one of the participants.**

1. Open **Messages** on your phone and start a **new group text**.
2. Add the people you'd normally include — your client, the other agent, the lender, title, and so on.
3. Add the **DocJacket Assistant** number as another participant.
4. Send your first message and continue texting normally.

That's it. Every message anyone sends in that group is captured onto the deal and appears on the **Texts** tab.

:::caution Include DocJacket when you *start* the group
Add DocJacket as a participant **when you create the group text**, not to a thread that's already going. On many phones, adding a new number to an existing text starts a *different* thread — so begin the group with DocJacket in it from the first message.
:::

## Step 3 — Watch it land on the deal

Back in DocJacket, open the transaction's **Texts** tab. The group text shows up as **one merged conversation**:

- Everyone's messages are woven into a single thread — not one conversation per person.
- Each participant has their **own name and color**, and people alternate sides, so it reads like a group chat you can scan at a glance.
- You **don't have to read the whole thread** — that's what the proposals are for (next page).

## Good to know

- **DocJacket doesn't reply in the group.** It watches and captures; it never sends a message into the client-facing thread. Anything it wants your attention on shows up *inside DocJacket*, not in the text.
- **Ordinary chatter is ignored.** "Thanks," "sounds good," and small talk produce nothing — see [Privacy & how it stays quiet](./privacy-and-quiet.mdx).
- **It captures; it doesn't change the deal.** When it spots a task or a date, it *proposes* it for you to approve — see [What it proposes & how to approve](./what-it-proposes.mdx).
- **A quick in-app tour** is available on the **Texts** tab: click the **help (?)** button there to walk through the conversation view and where proposals land.

## Where to go next

- **[What it proposes & how to approve](./what-it-proposes.mdx)** — the tasks and key dates DocJacket surfaces, and the Review queue.
