# Changing your sign-in email

You can change the email address you use to log in to DocJacket yourself, from
**Settings > Profile**. You do not need to contact support, and you do not need to
delete your account and sign up again.

This works no matter how you created the account — Google single sign-on, Microsoft,
or a magic link ("send me a link, no password needed").

:::note
If you previously saw the message **"Email cannot be changed (managed by Google)"** on
your profile page, that is out of date. Your sign-in email is no longer locked, and it
is no longer managed by your sign-in provider. The **Change** button described below
replaced it.
:::

## Change your login email

1. Go to **Settings > Profile**.
2. Find the **Sign-in Email** field — it shows the address you currently sign in with.
3. Click **Change** next to it.
4. Enter the new address under **New sign-in email**.
5. Click **Send confirmation**.

DocJacket sends a confirmation email to the **new** address, with the subject
**"Confirm your new DocJacket sign-in email"**.

**Nothing changes until you click the link in that email.** Until you do, you keep
signing in with your old address, and you can safely abandon the change by ignoring
the message.

## Confirming the change

Open the confirmation email **in the new mailbox** and click the link.

- The link is sent **only to the new address**. This is deliberate: it means that
even if someone else were signed in to your account, they could not move it to an
  inbox you don't control.
- The link **expires in 60 minutes** and can be used **once**.
- You can click it in any browser — it's fine if your work mail is on your phone and
you started the change on a laptop. You don't need to be signed in.

After you confirm, DocJacket sends you to the login page. **Sign in again using the
new address.** Your old address will no longer work for signing in.

## Common situations

### "I used my personal email by accident and want to swap to my work email"

This is the most common reason people change their sign-in email, and the steps above
are all you need. Your organization, transactions, contacts, documents, templates, and
team membership all stay exactly where they are — only the address you log in with
changes.

### "It says that email is already in use"

The address you want is attached to a different DocJacket account. Very often that's a
second account **you** created by accident — for example, signing up once with Google
and once with a magic link using the same address.

You'll see this either when you request the change or when you click the confirmation
link, with the message: *"That email was claimed by another account before you
confirmed, so your sign-in email is unchanged."*

If the other account is one of yours and it's empty, contact support and we'll release
the address so you can claim it. Don't delete your working account to get around this.

### "The confirmation link didn't work"

If you see *"That confirmation link has expired or was already used. Your sign-in
email is unchanged"*, the 60-minute window ran out or the link was clicked twice. Your
account is untouched — just start the change again from **Settings > Profile**.

### "I signed in with Google, so isn't my email locked?"

No. Changing your DocJacket sign-in email is independent of Google and Microsoft. You
do not need to change anything in your Google account first, and removing DocJacket
from your Google account does not change or unlock your DocJacket login. Use the
**Change** button on the profile page.

### "Should I just delete my account and make a new one?"

No — and please don't. Creating a fresh account loses your transactions, documents,
contacts, templates, and history, and it doesn't move your subscription. Changing the
sign-in email keeps all of it.

## What does *not* change

Changing your sign-in email changes **only how you log in**. In particular:

- **Your connected mailbox stays as it is.** Deal email — client updates, task emails,
reminders, portal invitations — keeps sending from the mailbox you connected under
**Settings > Email**. If you want that to change too, reconnect it there separately.
- Your organization, team members, and role are unaffected.
- Your billing and subscription are unaffected.
- Email already sent from DocJacket is unaffected.
